Teleflex is a medical device company specializing in vascular care that strives to improve the health and quality of people's lives through purpose-driven innovation. Teleflex approached us to create a scalable, consistent, and confidence-delivering design for its existing vascular product, Arrow ECG.

Nurses rely on Arrow ECG and its accompanying ultrasound feature set to gauge the diameter of an arm vein and place the ideal size catheter for cancer patients' treatment delivery and those undergoing other diseases. Our team set out to improve that experience for patients and nurses by creating an approachable and competitive product backed by research.

The Challenge

When it comes to placing and delivering treatment through a catheter, nurses rely on guided navigation and placement feedback to act as their eyes inside a patient’s body. Finding the appropriate catheter fit, inserting the tube, and tracking patient heart rate are all accomplished through an ultrasound. An additional piece rests securely on the patient’s chest continuously monitoring catheter position and creating a way for medicine to be dispersed in the heart without damaging the body. Our challenge was to create a design that delivered continuous guidance and appropriate feedback indicators during this critical procedure.

How we did it

Our research uncovered precision and safety to be nurses’ main concerns. Since Arrow ECG is used daily by various individuals, it was critical to improve the device's efficiency with easy-to-follow on screen processes. It needed to deliver confidence to nurses and safety of their patients.

The
Outcomes

Our final design delivered an easily operable and familiar interface that guided nurses at every step of the process. Overall usability was improved with fewer clicks to desired outcomes and scanable feedback indicators, while new features and automations were incorporated throughout the system for greater effeciency.

The Arrow ECG design allows patients to receive medicine promptly, completely eliminating the need for x-rays, and enables greater precision and safety for nurses completing the procedure daily.
