Raytheon asked us to harness its powerful capabilities by transforming its dated interfaces. We redesigned SureView, and other products in its security ecosystem, to create highly sought tools for quickly identifying and defending against insider threats. We helped Raytheon make an innovative leap past competition and strengthened its leadership position in enterprise cybersecurity.

The Challenge

How do you find an insider cybersecurity threat among hundreds or thousands of employees to protect your company’s information? A cybersecurity violation, whether accidental or intentional, can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Except this needle is dipped in poison and you must find it quickly before the damage spreads.

How We Did It

We started with discovery and planning sessions with product leadership and stakeholders to understand their needs and business goals. To identify opportunities for improvement and develop a strategy to align all products towards a shared vision, we provided expert reviews of SureView and related products. Following discovery, we led ethnographic research to observe cybersecurity administrators to base our designs on how they behave and not what they say.

 

Through cycles of wireframes and usability testing, we redefined the interaction paradigm, and reorganized overwhelming amounts of information so that security administrators know where to focus. We also streamlined their workflows to identify insider threats quickly through interactions with custom data visualizations. To bring everything together, we created an appealing and engaging visual design that was more than a pretty skin. We intentionally chose colors and iconography that allow you to see information and system status at a glance.

The
Outcomes

SureView is a trusted visual tool that makes it easier to quickly point out a potential threat in a sea of information. Over nine months, we met with product leadership to develop a strategy, observed users interacting with the product, and designed solutions based on their behaviors and frustrations. We closed with creating a visually engaging interactive demo for a successful high-profile sales and marketing event. To provide lasting value, we provided strategy and guidelines for Raytheon to continue to develop and refine the product after we completed our work.
