Last week we hosted a LinkedIn Live event on the "Impacts of Human-Centered AI and the Future of Surgical Robotics," led by UEGroup’s Senior Director of Design, Ashley Nicodemus. This session explored human-centered AI (HCAI) and where its principles can improve surgical robotic workflows. Ashley also shared a case study to illustrate how HCAI offers a solution to mass adoption by making robotic-assisted surgery systems work with the natural behavioral patterns of surgeons and surgical staff in the operating room.  

During the event, Ashley shared insights from her extensive experience in the medical and robotics fields, highlighting the crucial intersection of robotics and AI.

• The current landscape of robotics, artificial intelligence, and the way the technology behind them operates today in medical devices and where they intersect. She spoke to use cases like spacial recognition, image analysis and processing, and pattern recognition.  
   
• The hurdles of adopting robotics in the operating room, such as the perceived usefulness, ease of use, and behavioral control. She shared how those adoption barriers look different for those considering adopting the technology, during the initial purchase and implementation of the robotics systems, and the benefits of long-term adoption.
   
• An introduction to the Mazor X Robotics Platform and walk through of how some of the steps go against current surgeon workflows, and where the tension points are between current robotic solutions and natural behavior patterns.
   
• A case study using Humeo, a UEGroup conceptually designed robotic-assisted system, to illustrate how a HCAI-based surgical robot would look different from the current solutions if it were designed today.
